I have lost count of the number of times customers have asked me to provide a way for them to quickly access key folders in a SharePoint document library with out the need to find the library and drill into the folder structure and then to replicate those quick links in the site navigation menu.
The standard go-to solution is the Quick Links Web Part (QLWP), probably the most used web part of all time. Brilliant and useful as the QLWP is, it does have some weakness when used as a way to navigate library folders. These include:
- Each folder link requires manual configuration, and this is time consuming
- The links are static and so web parts (and corresponding site navigation links) require ongoing maintenance (which too often never gets done) when the underlying folder structure is updated
- The QLWP is a generic tool for setting up links to any web hosted resource and so it lacks any context which might be leveraged to add additional functionality such as:
- Indicating document and subfolder counts
- The ability to pick up on folder colouring
- Provide direct access to subfolders and documents.
And keeping site navigation synchronized with library folders is torturous as each link must be set manually.
